Choosing opponents in skiing sprint elimination tournaments

چکیده
Abstract In this study we analyse data from world cup cross-country skiing sprint elimination tournaments for men and women in 2015–2020. Instead of being assigned a quarterfinal according to seeding scheme, prequalified athletes choose themselves sequential order which the five quarterfinals compete. Due time constraint on day competition is held, recovery between heats varies. This implies clear advantage athlete race an early rather than late maximize probability reaching podium. The purpose paper athletes’ choices facing trade-off expected degree when choosing We find empirical support prediction that higher ranked qualification round prefer compete quarterfinals, despite harder competition. Nevertheless, our results also suggest underestimate value quarterfinal. addition, propose scheme capturing fundamental disparity across using estimates alogistic regression model.

Kinematics of sprint cross-country skiing
The purpose of our study was to characterise the diagonal stride locomotion during a new short sprint race in cross-country skiing. Thirty male cross-country skiers were sagittaly filmed on an uphill portion of the 1.2-km classic race of the world cup (2004) using a digital camera. The main body joints, skis and poles were digitised frame by frame. Results indicated higher SV and SR for similar...
متن کاملOptimal Seedings in Elimination Tournaments:
We study an elimination tournament with heterogenous contestants whose ability is common-knowledge. Each pair-wise match is modeled as an all-pay auction where the winner gets the right to compete at the next round. Equilibrium efforts are in mixed strategies, yielding rather complex play dynamics: the endogenous win probabilities in each match depend on the outcome of other matches through the...
متن کاملRobust Bounds on Choosing from Large Tournaments
Tournament solutions provide methods for selecting the best alternatives from a tournament and have found applications in a wide range of areas. Previous work has shown that several well-known tournament solutions almost never rule out any alternative in large random tournaments. Nevertheless, all analytical results thus far have assumed a rigid probabilistic model, in which either a tournament...
متن کاملPlayers with fixed resources in Elimination Tournaments
We consider T -round elimination tournaments where players have fixed resources instead of cost functions. We show that players always spend a higher share of their resources in early than in later rounds in a symmetric equilibrium. Equal resource allocation across T rounds takes place only in the winner-take-all case. Applications for career paths, elections, and sports are discussed.
متن کاملFixing Balanced Knockout and Double Elimination Tournaments
Balanced knockout tournaments are one of the most common formats for sports competitions, and are also used in elections and decision-making. We consider the computational problem of finding the optimal draw for a particular player in such a tournament. The problem has generated considerable research within AI in recent years. We prove that checking whether there exists a draw in which a player...
